The Museum seeks to become a permanent repository for visual, oral and written records and artifacts commemorating the lives and accomplishments of Blacks in Virginia. Our goal is to become a statewide resource on the many facets of Black history through exhibitions, discussions and celebrations. The Museum collects documents, limited editions, prints, art and photographs for use in its Black History Archives Program. This program will be of major significance because of the scarcity of written records on the Black experience.

Children's Museum of Richmond made its debut as the Richmond Children's Museum in 1977. An arrangement was made with the City of Richmond School Board for the Museum to lease the multi-purpose Navy Hill School building in downtown Richmond. In 1981, the Museum opened to the public with its premiere exhibit, Boxes, Blocks, and Blueprints. For the next 18 years, Children's Museum of Richmond welcomed children in to its small but heroic 8,100 square foot building. Then, in the year 2000, the Children's Museum of Richmond opened its new 42,000 square foot facility on West Broad Street.

This privately owned zoo features exotic animals such as lions, tigers, warthogs, giraffes, penguins and more. The giraffe feeding station is a favorite. The Safari Skyride chair lift provides visitors with an aerial view of the zoo.

From the exterior symbol of a menorah surrounded by barbed wire and a broken Star of David, the Virginia Holocaust Museum holds nothing back in its depiction of the extermination of 6 million Jews during World War II. From scenes and information about forced labor and The Final Solution's gas-chamber horrors, a trip to the museum will drive home the grim realities of the Nazi rampage.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston, but his ties to Richmond and the South would greatly influence his life and work. It was in Richmond that Poe grew up, married and first gained a national literary reputation. This museum features exhibits on the life and career of Edgar Allan Poe. By documenting his accomplishments with pictures, relics, and verse, and focusing on his many years in Richmond, visitors get a glimpse of what Edgar Allan Poe was like. Five small buildings and an enclosed garden house the poet's possessions and memorabilia.

Albert Warren Tillenghast, one of the best course architects of his time, designed Belmont Golf Course, formerly the Hermitage Country Club, in 1916. Donald Ross redesigned the course in 1927. This extremely hilly course features small greens and narrow fairways. A pond comes into play on at least two holes. This club was the site of the 1949 PGA Championship; Sam Snead was the champion.

Birkdale Golf Course is a layout that will challenge players of all ability levels. The par-71, 6,566-yard, championship tract was designed by renowned course architect Dan Maples, and is one of the best-conditioned golf courses in the Richmond area. Traditional in style, this golf experience promises to leave you feeling challenged yet good about your game.

Hunting Hawk Golf Club is a parkland style course designed by architect W. R. "Bill" Love. The overall design of the course is challenging but forgiving. The fairways are generous, with wide landing areas. Strategic play is required in order to avoid the many bunkers, moguls and trees that lie in wait of a careless shot. Several ponds on the course come into play on eleven holes. The greens are large, undulating and moderate in speed. Several greens are multi-tiered to provide an additional challenge, and all are guarded by a variety of earthworks, from sand bunkers, to mounds and grass hollows.

Independence Golf Club opened October 2001 and is located a short drive southwest of Richmond. This club boasts two Tom Fazio designed tracks: an eighteen-hole Championship Course and a nine-hole Short Course. Both courses are seamlessly blended into the local topography, and the holes include a mixture of flat and rolling fairways that tree-lined, yet wide enough to allow room to breathe. The greens are guarded by well-placed bunkers, and water comes into play on several holes in the form of wetlands.

The Golf Club at Brickshire is a championship eighteen-hole track designed by the team of Curtis Strange and Tom Clark of Ault, Clark, & Associates. The course winds through land full of swales and mountainous textures. Despite a length of 7,291-yards from the tips, Brickshire maintains its playability. Several of the holes on this course were designed to mimic notable holes from other top shelf courses throughout the world.

This facility offers three nine-hole courses that are played in three eighteen hole combinations: the Lake/Road, Lake/Cottage and Cottage Road courses. The course features a mixture of large and small greens throughout the entire twenty-seven holes. Water hazards come into play on six holes, and numerous sand bunkers have been positioned on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, young trees located throughout the course may alter shot selection.
